The healthcare system in the United States is notoriously complex, with people forced to navigate a confusing landscape of insurance options, medical billing practices, and administrative hurdles. Nearly six in ten insured Americans encountered problems using their health insurance in the past year, and this figure rises even higher for those in poor health or seeking mental health services. This complexity, combined with soaring costs, leads to widespread financial hardship—just under half of U.S. adults report difficulty affording health care, and one in four had trouble paying medical bills in the last year. Due to costs, 36% of adults delayed or skipped needed care, and about half say they couldn’t afford an unexpected medical bill of $500 without going into debt or borrowing from friends or family. Employer healthcare costs have risen by 160% in the last 20 years, now averaging $14,000 per employee, leading to downward wage pressure and a real decrease in household income. These financial burdens disproportionately harm uninsured, Black, and Hispanic adults as well as those with lower incomes, driving many Americans into medical debt and forcing some to resort to living without proper treatment.
